North Georgia and North Carolina

A long weekend in Georgia and North Carolina...  Over the Columbus Day weekend, weather was not the best but we wanted to see the leaves change in the mountains.   The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway offers an up-and-back train ride from Blue Ridge, Georgia into Copperhill, Tennessee along the Toccoa River.

But first...

Mercier Orchard

A stop at the tourist trap orchard for a "few" apple things,  cider, hard cider, donuts...  etc..   Kinda along the way, but just enough time to make us run to catch the train.

Tourist trap?  not too much although it was a bit busy.  Parking was a bit of a challenge, but "those people up front leave too"...  and after a short visit to a number of what used to be barn buildings, we make our selections and headed to Blue Ridge to catch the train.

Shiloh Battlefield National Park

One of the major battles in the early portion of Civil War Western Theatre was the battle of Shiloh.  The battlefield is a short drive from home...  and I always wondered about the infamous "hornets' nest"...  It was pretty high on my bucket list, and it was a great weekend adventure...

Camping

We left on Friday afternoon and headed to Pickwick Dam State Park...  nice weather, all seemed to be easy-peasy...

Until we were about five miles from the campsite...  and the pretty white puffy clouds turned dark gray and opened up with a downpour...  It was all we could do to figure out where the road was... and slow way down.

Finding the park entrance was a challenge, but thanks to Google Maps we could at least know when we were close to the turns.  But...   the deluge continued until it came time to back into the site...  We tried umbrellas to keep dry while backing into the narrow site (on an angle to the road, but still narrow and very small (it was a state park after all!).    -- lesson learned, have rain jackets with hoods in the truck even in bright sunny days --

In addition to the rain struggles, this was our first campground with water and electric only....  only a couple of days, and there was a dump station on the way out of the campground.  Manageable, but another first for us.   Although, we noticed on Sunday morning that there was a line waiting for the dump station...  lesson:  do not plan to travel on Sunday or dump on Saturday night...

A trip to Walmart for groceries yielded an interesting sight...

A horse and buggy tied to the light post in the middle of the Walmart parking lot...
There is an Amish community in the area, and the contrast between the horse and buggy and the modern Walmart shopping lot was interesting...

Shiloh

The Shiloh battlefield is named after the Shiloh Meeting House, built around 1853 by the Southern Methodists.

The battlefield park is huge, big enough that the only way to see it all is by following the auto tour and getting out every few minutes to look at various key battlefield sites.     We took the tour and stopped a number of times...

On the right side of this picture, you can see the low area on the battlefield that is called the "Sunken Road".   Confederate soldiers are reported to have called this area the "Hornets' Nest" because of the heavy rifle fire during the battle.

But the real goal of the Union Army was not the Shiloh Meeting House, or Pittsburg Landing, but the railroad crossing in Corinth about 17 miles to the SouthWest from the battlefield.

In Corinth, the north-south running Mobile and Ohio railroad crossed the east-west Memphis and Charleston railroad.  This crossing was one of the most important strategic sites during the war.

The battle started in the Shiloh area and proceeded SouthWest to Corinth...

It was a very chilling, exciting visit where we both learned a new respect and awe for the soldiers that fought during this very difficult time in our country's history...

Family Wedding in Pidgeon Forge

A couple of weekends under our collective belt, and it is on the way to a bigger challenge...  further away and a longer stay...

Work continues to get in the way of longer trips, but in a few months that will not be a problem!  Retirement is near....

A family wedding draws us for a whole FOUR days in Pidgeon Forge, TN...   The wedding had been planned for weeks, and we were going...  and with a brand new camper...  and since Pidgeon Forge is not too far away..   well, it just seemed like kismet...  meant to be...

The venue was on the top of a "mountain" with a wonderful view...

Complete with a rainbow!!

And a beautiful sunset...

David Crockett State Park (TN)

And then COVID got in the way...   we had planned to go to Gadsden (AL) for a barbeque festival in March, but COVID caused cancellation of the event...  and we hunkered down at home...

By the time May came around we felt more comfortable...   so off to David Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg, TN for another long weekend and learning more about this camping life...

Dinner on the portable gas grill...  First real meal
prepared in the trailer...

The dogs are getting very comfortable...

In the town square of Lawrenceburg is a statue

First Campsite

We figured that we should do a trial run... somewhere near home, and somewhere near some conveniences like a Walmart, a decent take-out place for dinner...  things like that...

And if possible,  inexpensive with full hookups, wi-fi, and most important pull-through sites...  Northgate RV Travel Park in Athens, AL.

Easy in, easy out... and dinner (take-out) from the local Applebee's restaurant...

And the dogs were not too upset with the change in their lives...  a really good thing...

Roxy getting comfortable on one of the recliners...

And Abby preferred the floor...  at least for now....

The Beginning

It all started on a coldish Saturday afternoon in January 2020....   we went out "shopping" for  a camping trailer.   We had come to the conclusion that we actually had enough money saved to retire.

We had discussed for a number of years that we wanted to retire and travel around the country to look and experience all those sights we had heard about and wanted to see ourselves...  Places like the biggest ball of string in the world, Civil War forts, the northern lights in Alaska... and the list went on and on....

Well, we went to "just look".. and, yes...   we bought a new travel trailer..  a Grand Design Imagine 22MLE..   small enough (22 feet) to handle easily, and yet big enough for the two of us, and the two dogs...

And then, we had to get a truck to tow the trailer...  of course....

And we are ready to depart on our great, new adventure...

Welcome!!!

We are retiring soon, and about to go onto the next phase of our life...

The real intent of this blog is so that I don't forget all the places we have visited, archive a few of the many pictures we will have, and to help keep a simple record of a very small part of our life together...

I look forward to seeing the sights and places of our wonderful world...   and remembering our trips...

Welcome aboard..
